FLICKR ALBUM: Lessons from Mexico

The Istmo (Isthmus of Tehuantepec) is the narrowest part of México.

Only 200 kilometers (125 miles) of land separate the Gulf of Mexico with the Pacific Ocean. It has two districts Juchitán and Tehuantepec and borders at the north with the state of Veracruz; to the south with the Pacific Ocean; to the west with Sierra Juárez and Sierra Madre del Sur, and to the east with the state of Chiapas.

NATURAL WORLD

Prepare for hot weather ... and plenty of rain in the summer. The Isthmus of Tehuantepec is a rolling tropical lowland. The town of Tehuantepec is located on the Papaloapan Plains, a scant 270 feet above sea level.

HISTORY

The isthmus was long considered a candidate for an interoceanic canal. Costs were prohibitive and instead a transisthmian railroad between Coatzacoalcos and Salina Cruz opened in 1907.
