Food, Health and Cultivating Communities

FLICKR ALBUM: Food

Planeta.com's Food, Health and Cultivating Communities Conference highlights local food and slow food and everything delicious! Updates are featured on the Planeta Wiki. Discussion continues on a number of social web channels, including Delicious, Facebook, Flickr, Foodspotting, Twitter and YouTube.

"Come hungry," says Planeta.com founder Ron Mader. "Foodies play a critical role in developing conscious and responsible travel and ecotourism, Choosing what we eat and where we eat goes a long way in cultivating communities and improving the health of visitors and locals alike. There are numerous ways to share stories about food that cultivate connections among growers and eaters."

Food takes us places we have not been yet, so the question today: where do we want to go?!

THE VALUE OF FOOD

There are several ways to enter a foreign culture - through appreciating music, sports, food and language. Among these and other options, food is an easy entry point which roots travelers and locals in a common ground.

Community gardens, farmers markets and distribution of natural food go a long way in supporting local economies and a healthy respect for environmental conservation and community building.

MEXICO

Mexico has one of the premiere cuisines in the world, noted for its diversity and innovative culinary and medicinal traditions. Planeta.com will be updating a number of features that provide background for visitors to the country's traditional markets and those interested in the growing slow food movement.

RADISH NIGHT IN OAXACA

Mexico is known for its colorful, grandiose festivals, but one of the most unique is Radish Night. La Noche de Rábanos is celebrated on December 23rd on the Zócalo and for more than a century has been a focal point of Christmas celebrations. Combining traditional folk art and agriculture, it is one of the most unique festivals in the world. True to its name, the Radish Night festival lasts only a few hours as vegetables have a limited lifespan as folk art.

Visitors find ornate radish sculptures, ranging from small animals and human figures to representations of grand events, including the Gueleguetza Dance and Nativity scenes. Come for the rábanos ... stay for the totomoxtle!

SLOW FOOD

Slow Food is to slow travel what happiness is to joy, mutually compatible.

FOOD MILES AND TRAVEL

As consumers around the world become aware of the carbon footprint of their travels and purchases, a new term has appeared. Introducing food miles which track the journey food takes from the farm to the table along with the carbon emissions that are created. Increasingly in United Kingdom and the rest of Europe labels on food items show food miles. The concept is not without debate and we will explore this topic further.
