June 12 Parks Inspiring Solutions G+ Hangout

Tourism in parks and protected areas can be a boon to local conservation efforts or it can afflict biodiversity conservation and environmental management. Many travelers find meaningful encounters with nature in protected areas, but these wilderness fans are often at a loss when figuring out where to go and how to visit parks in other countries.

This week is scheduling two public Google+ hangouts to discuss parks and tourism and to survey what's new and inspiring. We will be featuring members of the Tourism and Protected Areas Specialist Group and previewing the November World Parks Congress.

Thursday, June 12, 830-930am PDT Parks Inspiring Solutions Hangout: News
Thursday, June 12, 430-530pm PDT Parks Inspiring Solutions Hangout: Continuing Conversation

What are the optimum approaches to sustainable tourism in protected and natural areas?
How effective are protected area managers and policy makers in relation to tourism?
How do we best develop and disseminate knowledge on tourism and protected areas?

Technical Tip: Those interested in appearing on camera for Planeta's hangouts are asked to download the Google+ hangout plug-ins (if necessary) and to test this out beforehand. Please let Ron Mader know ahead of time if would like to join on screen and your gmail address. While the hangouts can be viewed by everyone, those appearing on screen are by invitation. Everyone is welcome to provide specific examples via Google+ or via Twitter by including @ronmader in your tweet.

How to join a Google hangout
Get an account on Google+ which requires a Gmail address.
Get a webcam and microphone.
Let the hangout facilitator/organizer know of your interest in participating.
Turn off Skype as it can cause conflicts with the Google hangout
Use the Google Chrome browser to load Google+

For professional chats which are recorded:
Once you're logged in - preferably 5-10 minutes before the chat begins, prepare a ‘lower third’ caption
Use your own Google+ page, Facebook account, Twitter or anything else you'd like to share with the world that the hangout is about to begin.
Bring something for show and tell. We love to hear you talk about tangible folkart, food and lo-fi heritage media: postcards, flyers, posters

How to watch a Google hangout
If you want to watch a hangout, no login is required. You can view the hangout live or archived on YouTube.

Buzzword Bingo: Hangout = To relax completely in an unassuming way, also Google term for live video conversation
