SLIDESHARE: Editing Tips

PLANETA.COM

It is easy to change the world when you help edit Planeta.com. Finding mispellings on the Web is like finding water in the ocean. That said, if we make a mistake, let us know.

We solicit editorial comments via the backchannel (email), the forum.and the wiki. Our only request is that you do not send attachments. As mentioned as one of the top email tips, unsolicited attachments are not appreciated. If there are massive edits, a skype call or face-to-face discussion works best.

CONTENT EDITS

The most useful edits are simple and direct. Here are the step-by-step instructions if you care to make helpful edits:

When submitting a factual correction, provide specific information -- starting with the URL of the document with the incorrect information.

Copy and paste the text into the body of an email and put edits in brackets -- []s. Write in normal letters. Please do not use capital letters, italics or quotes.

Indicate which paragraphs need corrections by copying the first five words or so of the paragraph followed by corrections.

Indicate deletions by [DELETE -- followed by text]
Indicate changes or suggestions by [SUGGESTION -- followed by comment]
Indicate additions by [new text]

HELPFUL EDIT

Frieda [DELETE Frieda -- Frida] Kahlo

Everything tends to be cheap [SUGGESTION -- inexpensive] by Northern hemisphere standards.

Gifts are welcomed but preferred to be scholar[ly] material for the children.

The rainforest, whilst full of many wonderful and carnivorous creatures is not a dangerous place [SUGGESTION -- Replace 'not a dangerous place' with 'is a safe place'] when one uses a modicum of common sense.

Where I saw 'four English journalists', please change this to 'four British journalists'. One was Welsh and would be very offended to be called English.

HELPFUL SUGGESTION

Suggestion. Consider changing

It is important to emphasize that what seems right to one, seems wrong to another.

to

What seems right to one, seems wrong to another.

NOT SO HELPFUL EDIT

mention Alberto at the iguana farm

A FEW WORDS ABOUT DEAD LINKS

Dead links are the bane of the Web. So if you come across any on this site, please report them.

Provide specific information -- the URL of the page with the dead link, the name and URL of the dead link itself and (if possible) the new URL.

TIPPING OFF GUIDEBOOK WRITERS

Guidebook publishers welcome comments from readers, though as Tom Brosnahan, veteran guidebook writer and host of Writers Website Planner.com, points out in the following vignette, comments are sought about the most recent edition.

My favorite story of guidebooks is from my Frommer's Mexico days. An old expat lady in Oaxaca kept a copy of my Mexico on $xx a Day and wrote me postcards every year about how I "got things all wrong" about Oaxaca. This restaurant had closed, that hotel had expanded, the exchange rate was no longer what I said it was, etc. She kept sending me postcards for years commenting on the same old edition, telling me it was more and more out of date. "Whoops! Goofed again!" she'd gloat when yet another fact went sour. By the time the book was a dozen years old she was having a one-woman fiesta of recrimination at my expense. As Barnum said, 'The noblest art is that of making others happy.'

FOR THOSE RESPONDING TO JOURNALISTS

If a journalist asks for editorial advice, respond promptly (within a day or two). If you cannot answer promptly, explain that. Many journalists are on tight deadlines.

BE PROACTIVE

Many editors and journalists want to know what's new in your corner of the world. Go beyond editing and write a media release. If you wish to contribute an article or suggest a link for Planeta.com, review the writers' guidelines.

BE TOLERANT

Editing demands patience and tolerance. Remember that editing is a collaborative endeavor that can reward everyone.

A FEW WORDS ABOUT WIKI

Wikipedia allows anyone to contribute to the editorial content of the online encyclopedia and dictionary. Look for greater opportunities to interact and suggest editorial revisions on Planeta.com and wikify your own site. Explore these ideas futher by consulting our guide to Wiki.
